Now, as for the reason he's in Skuldhellir, I suppose it isn't too far-fetched that he'd come to get away from his homeland; the town IS a bit out of the way from everything. After all, the cave used to be the lair of a very fearsome dragon, so the surrounding area is likely mostly empty, besides the farms and the tribes of gnolls and orcs.
That aside, he'll get to mingle with some very interesting, potentially prestigious, completely wealthy people. Being rich, he'd be allowed into the White Door Inn, which isn't nearly as disgruntling as the rest of the town, and living there for the rest of one's life actually isn't such a bad deal!
